L’immagine scelta da Keith Richards per omaggiare il compianto compagno di band non potrebbe essere più azzeccata ed emblematica. La morte di Charlie Watts segna un prima e un dopo per il mondo del rock, che oggi piange il suo più composto, riservato ed essenziale batterista. Mai una battuta fuori posto, né una in più né una in meno, dichiara Joan Jett, tra i tantissimi a ricordarlo.
Watts è scomparso in un ospedale di Londra in seguito a un intervento d’urgenza al cuore. All’inizio del mese aveva dichiarato il proprio rammarico per non poter unirsi alla band per le date statunitensi del No Filter tour per il quale è stato sostituito da un sodale amico, il session man Steve Jordan. L’operazione era andata bene, aveva affermato l’anziano musicista, che già stava pensando al suo ritorno sulle scene con lo stesso spirito che lo ha accompagnato per più di sessant’anni dietro le pelli.

Rimanendo in ambito Beatles, anche Ringo Starr ha voluto ricordare il batterista condividendo una foto d’archivio, e così hanno fatto anche il frontman degli Stones Mick Jagger, gli Who e tantissimi altri, tra cui Elton John, Debbie Harry dei Blondie, gli Yo La Tengo, Mike Watt.
