The Metallica Blacklist
The Metallica Blacklist è il mega tributo dedicato allo storico Black Album dei Metallica, pubblicato sotto la supervisione della stessa thrash metal band. Circa quattro ore di musica suddivisa in 4 dischi con ben 53 tracce e altrettanti artisti alle prese con i brani James Hetfield e soci. Un guazzabuglio dei generi più disparati che vede, tra i tantissimi altri, Miley Cyrus con WATT, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Robert Trujillo e Chad Smith interpretare Enter Sandman; brano rieseguito anche da Rivers Cuomo e suoi Weezer, da Phoebe Bridgers in chiave elettro pianistica e dal tocco languido di Dave Gahan.
Spiccano poi la versione noise punk di The God That Failed a cura degli Idles, con tanto di bassi à la Jesus Lizard e dosi di nevrosi contemporanea, e la rilettura di My Friend of Misery di Kamasi Washington, che devia le quadrate raffiche metalliche di My Friend of Misery in un visionario space jazz con inserti free, esaltato dalla morbida vocalità di Patrice Quinn e dal pianista Cameron Graves. Ma nell’infinta tracklist non mancano gli apporti dei Neptunes, con uno strambo remix di Wherever I May Roam, di un Mac DeMarco in versione metal, di St. Vincent che rilegge in chiave elettro rock Sad but True, e persino dell’hardcore degli OFF! di Keith Morris alle prese con Holier than Thou.
Al netto di alcune tracce sottotono, si tratta sicuramente di un’operazione interessante, ma che disperde il suo potenziale in un minutaggio eccessivo e una sovrabbondanza di versioni sovrapponibili, prestando il fianco a un sentore confusionale di fondo. Blacklist Album è uscito il 10 settembre 2021 via Blackened / Universal, in occasione dei trent’anni dell’album originale, assieme alla ristampa rimasterizzata di quest’ultimo. Tutto il ricavato sarà devoluto alla All Within My Hands Foundation, ente benefico fondato dal gruppo, e ad altre 50 associazioni no-profit indicate dai partecipanti al tributo. I Metallica torneranno ad esibirsi in Italia all’interno di Firenze Rocks 2022.
