Nonostante abbiano ammaliato almeno due generazioni di fan e venduto quasi 150 milioni di copie, i Genesis sono, tra i nomi di punta della storia del Rock, la band il cui catalogo è stato sottoposto al restyling della rimasterizzazione quasi per ultimo. Peraltro, ai primi tentativi, con risultati discutibili: libretti risicati, resa sonora di poco o nessun miglioramento, zero musica aggiuntiva: bastavano i pochi singoli e le esigue outtake che nessuno ha pensato di utilizzare.
Solo nel 1998, con Archive 1967-75 soprattutto, e Archive #2 1976-1992 del 2000, si è riparato in parte all’incuria palesata in precedenza; dopodiché è arrivato il profluvio di box set pubblicati tra il 2007 e 2009: 1970-1975, 1976-1982, 1983-1998 e 1973-2007 Live (wow!, che professione di fantasia nel trovare i titoli, alla Virgin/Atlantic), hanno fatto completa giustizia su una delle discografie più importanti – per motivi artistici o commerciali, nelle due incarnazioni della band – degli ultimi 50 anni.
Ora, con i Genesis messi definitivamente in ghiaccio (ma mai dire mai), la palla passa alla discografia, che sguinzaglia i suoi raiders of the lost recording. Missione: immergersi negli scantinati polverosi degli archivi più datati per scovare ciò che rimane di ancora inedito, da impastare con quanto già reso pubblico ma in certi casi (tutto ciò che ho listato in precedenza) divenuto prezioso e introvabile, appannaggio dei collezionisti.
Cosa contiene
È con questa filosofia che dal 3 marzo sarà disponibile – ma già in pre-order – Genesis BBC Broadcasts, in due versioni: 5 Cd oppure 3 vinili.
Il CD box set è allettante: oltre a Sheperd, Pacidy, Let Us Now Make Love, Stagnation, chimerici oggetti del desiderio che dopo avere arricchito per anni i bootleger sono finalmente stati raccolti su Archive 1967-1975, il CD 1 contiene una manciata di classici registrati nel 1972 (solo Watcher Of The Skies è datato 1975) tra Peel Sessions e Parigi.
Il CD 2 raccoglie brani della performance al Festival di Knebworth 1978, dove i Genesis erano headliner, e del concerto al Lyceum del 1980, data che faceva parte del tour di Duke. Anche il CD 3 è occupato da brani di quest’ultimo concerto – cosa che fa pensare che si tratti dell’intero show – salvo Mama e Domino, a Wembley nel 1987, già pubblicate su Live 1973-2007 e sul DVD Live At Wembley Stadium.
I primi 8 brani del CD 4 risalgono al concerto di Wembley del 1987, precedentemente reperibili solo in formato video sul DVD di Live At Wembley Stadium, più gli inediti Not About Us e Dividing Line registrati al NEC nel 1998. Il CD 5 è totalmente dedicato al concerto di Knebworth del 1992.
CD vs vinile
Operazione incomprensibile, a fronte dei 53 brani che compongono il CD box set, sul triplo vinile ne vengono stipati solo 23, meno della metà. Ma quando c’è di mezzo Tony Banks, che ha fatto la selezione insieme a Nick Davis, produttore di fiducia dell’ultima fase della band, tutto è possibile: anche doversi sorbire ancora That’s All (da Wembley 1987 e già su Live 1973-2007), la pistola fumante di come la decisione di affidare la chitarra solista a Mike Rutherford, soprattutto pensando a chi l’aveva in mano tra il 1969 e il 1976, sia stata una delle più scellerate intraprese dal gruppo.
That’s All, e Old Medley (Knebworth 1992), ogni tour con sempre meno carne attorno all’osso, quasi a ripudiare la fase più concettuale della storia della band: quella delle fiamme così alte che sono state viste ai quattro angoli del mondo. Avremmo fatto a meno di entrambi i titoli per qualche altra chicca che forse ai raiders non è sfuggita, ma per chissà quale motivo resterà ignota fino a data da destinarsi o per sempre. Un libretto di 40 pagine accompagna l’offerta sonora.
Il piatto è comunque ricco per entrambe le generazioni di fan e, come afferma il vecchio detto, merita di ficcarcisi dentro.
