Roky Erickson RIP. Il ricordo di Mark Lanegan (e tanti altri)

E' morta una delle icone massime dello psych rock. RIP Roky Erickson

«Sono devastato nell’apprendere della morte di Roky Erickson. E’ stata una delle ragioni per le quali ho iniziato a cantare. Una grande ispirazione e un gigante della storia del rock. Negli anni ’80 lo chiamavo tutti i giorni. Lui rispondeva tipo una volta ogni due mesi e parlavamo di film horror. Che grande perdita».

Sono le parole di Mark Lanegan in ricordo di Roger Kynard Erickson, frontman di una delle primissime band psichedeliche negli anni ’60, i 13th floor Elevators dell’indimenticato Easter Everywhere e del singolo You’re Gonna Miss Me, e solista dagli anni ’70 in poi accompagnato da varie formazioni tra cui gli Okkervil River. Il chitarrista e cantante è morto nella sua città, ad Austin, all’età di 71 anni. La notizia, dopo esser circolata tra amici e compagni di band durante la notte, ha trovato conferma – via Variety – nelle parole del fratello Mikel attraverso Bill Bentley, produttore del tributo a Erickson del 1990 Where the Pyramid Meets the Eye in cui erano presenti ZZ Top, R.E.M. e altri ancora. «Roky ha vissuto così tanti mondi – scrive il produttore – impossibile stargli dietro. Ha vissuto così tanto e non sempre su questo pianeta».

Roky Erickson was the most beautifully unique person I’ve ever known and perhaps the most brilliant. He changed my understanding of how both music and the world work and he rekindled my faith in both. The time I got to spend with him is one of the greatest gifts I got out of music. There’ll never be another like him and we’ll all miss him forever. Love to his family and all the musicians who played with him and everyone who ever tried in a pure and unselfish way to give him a hand.

Now that Roky has passed I like to imagine a bunch of stoner garage rock room mates all getting up off the couch and starting to wash dishes. Then they pull down the bedsheet drapes on their windows and see all their neighbors throwing out 2 liter bottle gravity bongs

Devastated to hear of Roky Erickson's passing. One of the reasons I began singing. A huge inspiration and giant in the history of rock.
