Su Twitter e sui media musicali internazionali stanno proliferando post e articoli su Meg White, batterista dei disciolti White Stripes, il duo formato alla fine degli anni ’90 assieme all’allora marito Jack White.
L’oggetto del contendere è un dissing bello e buono: un utente del social di nome Lachlan Markay (93.464 follower) ha sparato a zero sulla batterista definendola meno di una «half decent drummer». L’invettiva è stata cancellata ma gli screenshot non perdonano. Inevitabile la serie di risposte che ne è seguita, tra cui troviamo il commento ironico del “solito” Geoff Barrow, uno che sui social ogni tanto questo tipo di polemiche le attiva di suo, e che vi riportiamo proprio perché da lì è possibile leggere il tweet dal quale tutto è partito.
La cosa tragica dei White Stripes è pensare a che grande band avrebbero potuto essere anche solo con un/a batterista la metà che decente. Sì sì lo so, ho sentito quel che dite ‘è un sound accuratamente realizzato’. Mi spiace, Meg White era terribile e a nessuna band fanno gioco delle percussioni di m*rda

A difendere l’operato di Meg White sono intervenuti Karen Elson, anche lei ex moglie di Jack White (che l’ha definita una batterista fantastica) e il batterista Questlove dei Roots, anche premio Oscar per Summer of Soul che ne ha segnato il debutto alla regia (che punta il dito contro chi vorrebbe raggiungere una «high music perfection» che non serve né ad una buona composizione né alla musica in generale). Ma anche Tim Burgess, altro musicista molto attivo sui social, Damon di Damon And Naomi e molti altri.

Appropriata anche la riposta del Twitter user Nick Portnell: «Il tipo di persone che scrive questi commenti è lo stesso che pensa che i Velvet Underground avrebbero suonato meglio con Stewart Copeland alla batteria».
