Lo scorso 9 aprile è morto Chris Bailey, fondatore, cantante e songwriter degli australiani Saints. La notizia è stata diffusa tramite i canali social della stessa punk band che scrive: «Chris lived a life of poetry and music and stranded on a Saturday night».
Nato nel 1957 in una colonia del Kenya da genitori irlandesi ma cresciuto a Belfast e poi a Brisbane, in Australia, Bailey, ha formato i Saints nel ’73 assieme a Ed Kuepper e Ivor Hay. Il debut single, (I’m) Stranded, autoprodotto da un’etichetta fondata dalla stessa band (Fatal Records, settembre 1976), è ad oggi il loro brano più noto e apprezzato, anche perché considerato tra i primissimi inni punk (o meglio proto punk).
Il pezzo ha inoltre dato il nome al primo album della formazione, al quale sono seguiti, in rapida successione, Eternally yours e Prehistoric sounds, entrambi del 1978, e altri 11 LP. L’ultimo lavoro, King of the Sun, risale al 2012 e vedeva Bailey come unico componente operativo tra coloro che avevano fondato la band. Di fatto è lui l’elemento attorno al quale la band ha attraversato quasi quarant’anni di carriera, attività divisa, a partire dal 1983, con quella solista, iniziata con l’album Casablanca e conclusa discograficamente parlando nel 2005 con Bone Box.
Tra i fan di Bailey, ci sono anche, e notoriamente, Nick Cave e Warren Ellis, ma anche Duff McKagan dei Guns N’ Roses (che cita Know Your Product). Questi ultimi hanno aperto il loro account Twitter per omaggiarlo assieme a tanti altri, compresi Kuepper, Dr John Willsteed dei Go-Betweens e Bruce Springteen (che nel 2014 coverizzò la sua Just Like Fire Would).
